This beginner to intermediate class explores how DNA testing can enhance your family history research. Topics include the different types of DNA tests available, understanding ethnicity estimates, working with DNA matches (“cousins”), and using genetic information to solve family mysteries and overcome research challenges. The first week will cover an introduction to DNA testing, types of tests available, understanding ethnicity estimates and ancestral origins, and learning how to interpret DNA matches. The following week will cover how to use DNA matches to expand your family tree, investigate unknown connections, solve family mysteries, and explore additional research tools. Kristen Fehlhaber, a professional genealogist and Vice President of the New England Chapter of Association of Professional Genealogists, is the former Assistant Director at the Museum of Old Newbury. She specializes in 19th and 20th century immigrant research.
