Description

Antarctica is a cold and inhospitable continent that only the hardiest plants and animals can withstand living upon. Going back millions of years ago, however, this was far from the case. This class will explore the ancient ecosystems, organisms, and geologic history of Antarctica. Utilizing a variety of scientific publications and articles, the instructor will walk you through the surprisingly rich history of Earth’s southernmost continent. From trilobites to giant penguins and even polar dinosaurs, you’ll be introduced to a myriad of terrestrial and aquatic creatures, as well as the changing ecosystems around them. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how Antarctica froze over, what it was like during the age of the dinosaurs, or how the breakup of Pangea formed our modern southern hemisphere, you’ll get all that and more! This course content is appropriate for ages 15+ and suitable for students with little to no prior knowledge on the subject.
