Painting: the Basics

Your guide into the magnificent world of art. Painting from life and photos, you will receive individualized instruction and critique. This is a terrific class for those who have never picked up a brush as well as for those who have been painting for several years. You’ll learn basic skills, from color mixing to application techniques. Ethan will cover the fundamentals of design and composition enabling students a greater degree of artistry. Under Ethan’s guidance, you’ll gain the skills and aesthetic to create paintings.

  • Bring a canvas pad (18” x 24”) and acrylic paints (colors should include Burnt umber, Ultramarine blue, Cadmium yellow light, Alizarin crimson, Titanium white).
  • Other supplies to bring: a plastic water container, pallet knife, pallet pad or plastic container for paint, and various brushes—flat and round.
  • Students are encouraged to include an equal size or smaller paper sketch pad suitable for drawing and painting exercises. Please also bring an apron and paper towels.

Six, 2-hour sessions: Mondays, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Begins January 29, 2024. Nock Middle School.
Cost: $240. Class Limit: 8.

  • Most classes are also available to teens 15 years and over.
  1. There are NO REFUNDS given unless a class is canceled.
  2. There are NO REFUNDS given on the day class begins.
  3. There are NO REFUNDS given after a class begins.
  4. There are NO REFUNDS given if a student withdraws within three (3) days prior to class start date.
  5. In order to receive a refund or class voucher, students must give notice of withdrawal at least 4 days prior to class start date. Vouchers may be used anytime for any class and have no expiration date.

  • If, for any reason, the Newburyport schools are closed or cancelled (ie. inclement weather)… Adult Ed classes will also be cancelled.

  • In the case of a class cancellation, you may choose a credit voucher which can be used for any class at any time, or a refund.
  • We do not send registration confirmations. We only contact you if your class is cancelled or full.
