Boating Safety




Class Description

U.S. Coast Guard Joseph Amore, Public Education Officer,, is offering an interesting, exciting, and in-depth boating safety course for boating enthusiasts aged 12 and up. This boating class will give the novice and experienced boater the knowledge needed to obtain a boating safety certification accepted by many states. Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who have successfully completed the Boating Safety class.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to Boating: types of power boats and their uses.
  • Boating Law: Federal & State regulations.
  • Boating Safety Equipment: legal requirements for: life jackets; fire extinguishers.
  • Sound-producing devices; visual distress signals; anchor lines; other boating safety equipment
  • Navigation: The U.S. Aids to Navigation system; types of buoys and beacons; navigation rules, avoiding collisions, sound signals.
  • Boating Problems: Capsizing; accidents; river hazards; distress calls and other problems boaters may encounter.
  • Trailer, Storing and Protecting Your Boat: Launching, retrieving, recommendations on how to maintain and protect your boat.
  • Hunting and Fishing, Water-skiing and River Boating: Requirements, recommendations and tips are reviewed and discussed.

Four, 2½-hour sessions: Tuesdays, 6:30–9:00 p.m.
Begins May 7, 2019. Nock Middle School.
Cost: $100. Additional fee for text: $45 to be paid to Instructor.
