Class Description
Kaylee Hawkes
If you are a local boater, ecology enthusiast, or just want to fulfill your childhood dreams of being a marine biologist, this is the class for you! Plum Island native and marine biologist Kaylee Hawkes brings in-depth knowledge of the cetaceans (aquatic mammals) that are commonly found in the Gulf of Maine waters off Newburyport. We will talk about the five species of cetaceans most common in our marine backyard, how to tell them apart, important life history, individual identification, and what you can do to save the whales for years to come. A naturalist with a local whale watch for 4 years, Kaylee studied marine biology at the University of New Hampshire and currently teaches science at Georgetown High School. She has a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm about our local fauna that she loves to share with adults and teens alike.
