Class Description
Aysim Hakioglu.
If you’ve ever wanted to learn about clay and hand building but have little or no experience, this 6-week course is perfect for you. With hand-building you will use your hands and simple tools without a pottery wheel. We’ll begin by exploring the characteristics of clay and quickly move on to practicing the pinching technique. Next, we’ll progress to slab building, creating a lidded box, a bowl, and possibly a mug from flat slabs of clay. We’ll also cover various decorating techniques, including stamping, carving, and sgraffito (scratching to expose colors underneath). By week 5, your pieces will be bisque fired, and you’ll spend weeks 5 and 6 decorating them for glaze firing. Once your pieces are glaze-fired, you’ll be able to pick them up within 10 days after the final class. We will use Cone 6 stoneware clay, firing will be cone 6 electric firing. There will be a selection of underglaze and glaze options to use in the class.
