Beginner Hand Building With Clay

Class Description

Aysim Hakioglu

Course is now 3 extra hours in total! If you’ve ever wanted to learn about clay and hand building but have little to no experience or have no access to a studio, this 6-week course is for you. In this course you will use your hands and simple tools without a pottery wheel to make two or three- dimensional items. We’ll begin by exploring the characteristics of clay and quickly move on to practicing the pinching technique. Next, we’ll progress to slab building, creating a few items such as a lidded box, bowl, mug, and a plate from flat slabs of clay. We’ll discuss various decorating techniques, including stamping, carving, and sgraffito (scratching to expose colors underneath). You’ll spend classes 5 and 6 decorating them for glaze firing. Once your pieces are glaze-fired, you’ll be able to pick them up within 10 days after the final class. We will use Cone 6 stoneware clay and firing will be Cone 6 electric firing. There will be a selection of underglaze and glaze options to use in the class.

Six, 2.5-hour sessions: Saturdays, 2:00 – 4:30 p.m.
Begins February 1, 2025. Location: Instructor’s Studio in Merrimac, MA.
