Do you love to garden? Do you dream of having your own backyard farm where you can grow organic fruits and vegetables, free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers? Perhaps you’ve always wanted to raise chickens so you can gather fresh eggs for breakfast? Then dig in! This introductory course is for the novice and will cover the essentials of getting started including planning, prepping, and planting. Topics to be covered include choosing your garden’s location, proper soil, growing seasons, crop selection, fertilizing, pruning, and pest control. You’ll leave with practical tips and the know-how needed to get started. Now is the perfect time to start planning for your garden, no matter how big or small your space. As a backyard farmer, you’ll enjoy fresh, healthy food while reducing both your carbon footprint and your grocery bills. Experience the joy and satisfaction of intentionally growing and consuming your own bounty.

Four, 1 hour sessions: Thursdays, 6:30 – 7:30 pm.
Begins May 1, 2025. Nock Middle School.
Cost: $100. Class limit: 15.

Instructor: Farmer John Macone has been a backyard gardener for over 20 years and proprietor of Farmer John’s Organic Farmstand, a little known gem in Amesbury.

Greater Newburyport Adult & Community Education (GNACE) is a completely self-sustaining program that is funded primarily from class fees, grants, and private donations. While we operate under the auspices of the Newburyport Public Schools, GNACE receives no public funding from the City of Newburyport or school system.   • Those are just a few of the nearly 200 exciting classes offered by GNACE each year.

  • Anyone from the Greater Newburyport community is welcome to participate as a student or to become a teacher!
  • Most classes are also available to teens 15 years and over.
  1. If a class is cancelled, a refund or voucher will be given.
  2. Refunds are not given on the day class begins or after a class begins.
  3. If notice of class withdrawal is made within three (3) days prior to the class start date, there is no refund.
  4. In order to receive a refund or class voucher, students must give notice of withdrawal at least 4 days prior to class start date. If you choose a voucher, it may be used anytime for any class and has no expiration date.
  • If, for any reason, the Newburyport schools are closed or cancelled (ie. inclement weather)… GNACE classes will also be cancelled.
  • Check the Website, Facebook, Instagram, or call (978) 992-8060 for class cancellation updates.
  • If a class is canceled, a make-up day will be coordinated with the instructor and students.
  • We do NOT send registration confirmations OR class reminder emails. We kindly ask that you mark your calendar. However, if you register online, the automatic email you receive from Stripe will serve as your registration confirmation.
  • We will contact you if your class is cancelled or sold out.
  1. Your instructor will email you the link within one week of class start date.
  2. To participate you need only basic computer skills and a strong internet connection.
  3. Here are some instructions on how-to join a meeting with special instructions for Mac and Windows computers.
