Class Description
Andrea Cleghorn
Memoir can take many forms, but what differentiates it from autobiography is the focus on a specific period or theme, rather than an entire life. The difference can be both liberating and challenging for the writer. This workshop is intended to encourage participants to move forward with the help and example of fellow writers and friendly listeners. Memoir is all about the stories, and the important thing is to start writing and keep going! Andrea will offer topic guidelines and advice on how to develop scenes, create dialogue, and avoid pitfalls. Class members will read something from their own writing each week, whether from the memoir in progress or a weekly prompt. Andrea Cleghorn is a journalist, nonfiction author, and writing coach. Her memoir is The Whipple Brunch. Her most recent book (2023), Dog Tales: An Unleashed Collection of True Stories, is an anthology of 33 essays, many of which were written by students of this class. www.andreacleghorn.com
