Learn To Evaluate and Challenge a Residential Real Estate Valuation

Do you ever wonder if the tax assessor got it wrong? In this class you will learn how to evaluate and challenge a residential real estate valuation and tax assessment in a timely manner. We will discuss the initial consideration of a challenge, filing an abatement application with the local assessors, and how to appeal the assessor’s denial (or partial granting) of the application with a statement or petition filed with the Massachusetts Appellate Tax Board (MATB), the state’s tax court. Class hand-outs include guides, forms and other useful resources. Marc Tucker is an attorney in Newburyport who spent 30-plus years at the MATB as Commissioner and Tax Counsel. David Cella is presently the Chief Counsel of the MATB.

One, 2.5-hour session: Monday, 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.
January 27, 2025. Nock Middle School.
Cost: $50. Class Limit: 20.

  • Anyone from the Greater Newburyport community is welcome to participate as a student or to become a teacher!
  • Most classes are also available to teens 15 years and over.
  1. If a class is cancelled, a refund or voucher will be given.
  2. Refunds are not given on the day class begins or after a class begins.
  3. If notice of class withdrawal is made within three (3) days prior to the class start date, there is no refund.
  4. In order to receive a refund or class voucher, students must give notice of withdrawal at least 4 days prior to class start date. If you choose a voucher, it may be used anytime for any class and has no expiration date.
  • If, for any reason, the Newburyport schools are closed or cancelled (ie. inclement weather)… GNACE classes will also be cancelled.
  • Check the Website, Facebook, Instagram, or call (978) 992-8060 for class cancellation updates.
  • If a class is canceled, a make-up day will be coordinated with the instructor and students.
  • We do not send registration confirmations. We only contact you if your class is cancelled or full.
  1. To participate you need only basic computer literacy. Primarily the skills required: download, email, word processing, and printing.
  2. You will need to download Zoom onto your computer HERE. And to test your system, Zoom offers a test site HERE.
  3. Here are some instructions on how-to join a meeting with special instructions for Mac and Windows computers.
