This is an introductory class for beginners about The Fifth Kingdom – The Fungi Kingdom. You will be introduced to the Fungi Kingdom, also known as the miracle worker of nature. The first week will cover the history of fungi on Earth; basic vocabulary terms and the fungal kingdom placement in the ecosystem; the relationship of fungi and trees, plants; life cycle of mushroom; anatomy of mushroom; classification of fungi and how they are named; mushroom hunting safety and ethics; tips on cooking and storing mushrooms (wild ones and store bought). The second week will cover 5 plus 5 local mushroom groups to know (edible and non edible ones); deadly and toxic poisonous mushrooms in our area and the difference between them, including mushrooms in the veggie garden; how to grow mushrooms from kits; and resources for beginners. Fungi can be food, a decomposer of debris and also a healing agent. A native of Czechoslovakia, Jana Harris of Essex Forays is certified in Wild Mushroom Food Safety and is a member of the Boston Mycological Club. She is also host and co-producer of Fungi Finders.

Two, 1.5-hour classes: Saturdays, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.
March 15 and March 22, 2025.

  • Anyone from the Greater Newburyport community is welcome to participate as a student or to become a teacher!
  • Most classes are also available to teens 15 years and over.
  1. If a class is cancelled, a refund or voucher will be given.
  2. Refunds are not given on the day class begins or after a class begins.
  3. If notice of class withdrawal is made within three (3) days prior to the class start date, there is no refund.
  4. In order to receive a refund or class voucher, students must give notice of withdrawal at least 4 days prior to class start date. If you choose a voucher, it may be used anytime for any class and has no expiration date.
  • If, for any reason, the Newburyport schools are closed or cancelled (ie. inclement weather)… GNACE classes will also be cancelled.

  • If a class is canceled, a make-up day will be coordinated with the instructor and students.
  • We do not send registration confirmations. We only contact you if your class is cancelled or full.
  1. To participate you need only basic computer literacy. Primarily the skills required: download, email, word processing, and printing.
  2. You will need to download Zoom onto your computer HERE. And to test your system, Zoom offers a test site HERE.
