“Sturm und Drang”(German: “Storm and Stress”)…

Class Description

in the “Land of Poets & Thinkers”

Inga Wennik will explore a short period in German literary history, in the late 18th century, which fostered a protest movement against the perceived confines of the rationalism of the Enlightenment. This movement inspired writers, poets, philosophers, musicians and artists to do some of their most passionate and exquisite work, giving free reign to unrestrained emotions, individuality and freedom of expression with a distinct anti-aristocratic slant. (The movement was also inspired by the American Revolution.) The course will introduce participants to the works of Goethe and Schiller, Mozart and Haydn, and others, in prose, poetry, theater, opera and other art forms as they were informed by this “Storm and Drive / Stress” era.

Begins October 31, 2019. The Wennik Home in Newbury.
